Spirituality

What is Spirituality?

Spirituality is a very thought provoking word. The meaning of spirituality has shifted since our parent's generation, when the concepts of spirituality and religion seemed to be interchangeable. A recent survey indicated that many people see organized religion as "intolerant and divisive," whereas spirituality is viewed as more "universal and broadly inclusive". In modern terms, the meaning of spirituality is much more personal and can be defined in different ways from person to person. Generally speaking, the definition of spirituality includes anything that can have an influence a person's soul and spirit.

The Need for Spiritual Growth:

In the past ten years, hundreds of spiritual books have been published that focus on the workplace, with titles ranging from the Tao of Leadership to Workplace Spirituality for Dummies. This trend reveals that even in typically less religious circles, including the business world, that there is increasing interest in getting spiritual wisdom in life. However, digging a little deeper than the latest media gimmicks related to spiritualism involves a lot of thought and self examination. And it also means acknowledging that all humans naturally have a spiritual need, regardless of how they may choose to fill it.

The effort of this search is worthwhile because the effects of pursuing spirituality are far-reaching and powerful. "Most original research articles on the topic have found positive associations between increased spirituality and better health outcomes," according to Professor Hedley G. Peach of the University of Melbourne, Australia. Studies have proven time and again that physical health and spiritual health are very closely connected.

Spiritualism Around the World: Although we live in a modern and technologically-driven world, it makes sense that people are searching for new age spirituality, specifically for greater meaning, a purpose in life and a sense of lasting happiness and satisfaction.

Aboriginal Walk About: An ancient aboriginal custom in Australia where a person walks through the desert and bush as part of a spiritual journey that often covers more than 1500 kilometers. The walk is done completely unassisted, without a guide, compass or map. The main idea behind a walk about is much more than just walking aimlessly. The walk is done with purpose in a ritual that is meant to encourage spiritual healing and inner peace.
