Body Constitution (Prakriti)
Prakriti is the group of characters inherited by an individual from sukra(spermatozoon ) and sonita(ovum ) of the parents depending upon the predominance of dosha or doshas prevailing at the time of sexual intercourse.
Prakriti is stated to be formed just as poison in the poisonous snake or creature and as toxin in toxic plant. Since the poison is not harmful to the creature in which it is present, in the same way , the prakriti which is formed at the very starting of life, will not be harmful to the individual. Since the body is merely a multiplied and developed form of ; sukrasonita, the dosha; predominance in the form of prakriti will also reach to each and every cell of the body and ultimately become natural and inherent to the whole body.
One of the most powerful conceptual tools in ayurveda is the three dosha theory.
Dosha - generally means tridosha, but there are basically two types of dosha-
- Sareeraka dosha(bodily) – vata dosha, pitta dosha, kapha dosha
- Manasika dosha (mind) – rajasik, tamasik, satwik.
Now this dosha theory explains how the five elements (water, air, fire, space, earth) which make up physical creation dynamically combine to control all processes with in the human physiology.
Like Vata dosha - is the principle governing all motion or movement in the body.
Pitta dosha - which controls all transforming processes eg. digestion.
Kapha dosha - which is responsible for cohesion, growth and liquefaction.
Without any one of these processes, there would be no human life. So prakriti is the most useful tool that this science has to offer for maintaining an ideal state of health. It recognizes that each human being is born with a unique combination of the three doshas, and that this natural balance is what is responsible for the physical, mental and emotional differences among people. By identifying and maintaining an individual’s prakruti, ayurveda can help each person create his or her own state of ideal health.
