Are you new to Ayurveda?
An Ayurvedic treatment can be compared to visiting a tailor for a custom made suit, as opposed to purchasing a one size fits all garment off the rack. Why take the same medication that everyone else does, regardless of your age, medical history or unique symptoms? Like a personal fitting session with a tailor, each treatment consultation with an Ayurvedic therapist allows for small modifications to ensure that the end result is a perfect fit for you.Ayurveda is an advanced Indian medical system of treating illness and promoting wellness and vitality. While each treatment is adapted to fit individual needs, the following is an outline of some of the many forms of Ayurvedic treatments available.
Ayurvedic Vaidya Consultation:
A private consultation with an Ayurvedic Vaidya (doctor) will help to determine your current body constitution. It may also make you more aware of your own traits and tendencies, which will help you to lead a more balanced lifestyle. During a consultation, the Vaidya may suggest specific modifications to your diet, sleep or exercise routines. The goal of an initial consultation is to create a detailed lifestyle plan that promotes physical and emotional health and harmony.Ayurvedic Diet Analysis: One of the key principles of Ayurveda is that each individual has unique dietary and lifestyle needs. A person's wellbeing is dependent on a harmonious balance of three forces, called doshas. As you work with your Ayurvedic practitioner to identify your dominant dosha, you will learn how specific dietary modifications can help to keep your systems working at optimum levels.
A specialist can teach you how to cook with consideration of the eight energies inherent in the foods we eat. To calm or stimulate a certain dosha, you can modify the amounts of energy you consume. To maintain health, you need to balance:
- Hot and cold
- Oily and dry
- Soft and sharp
- Heavy and light
By incorporating specific herbs and tastes into the diet, the foods we eat can have a powerful healing effect on the mind and body.
Balance in Ayurveda:
Ayurveda advocates that keeping a harmonious balance allows the body to heal itself. Good health and vitality can be maintained by regulating three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Together, these three factors control all activities of our bodies. If one dosha becomes aggravated or out of balance due to factors such as advancing age, the changing of seasons or stress levels, symptoms can start to appear. Ayurvedic herbs and other treatments can be used to calm the dosha and its associated symptoms. Bringing the body back into harmony by making these changes will encourage the body to strengthen and recover itself without the need for drastic interventions.
The benefits of a balanced Vata are:
- A strengthened immune system
- Mental alertness.
- Good sleep patterns
A balanced Pitta will help with:
- Body temperature regulation
- Good digestion and absorption
- A clear, glowing complexion
- An overall sense of calm and contentment
A balanced Kapha means:
- A strong muscular system
- Healthy joint functioning
- Improved stamina
- Clear thinking faculties
If you've recently noticed a decline in one of these qualities, you may want to work with your Ayurvedic specialist to bring your body into harmony again.
Choose an experienced Ayurvedic therapist: You will want to find a Ayurvedic specialist you feel comfortable with so that you can build an ongoing relationship. Since Ayurveda takes in much more than just physical symptoms, look for a provider that offers a full range of traditional Indian treatments and lifestyle therapies. This may include yoga, exercise programs, massage, nutrition and diet analysis and herbal prescriptions.
Many holistic centers offer a variety of Ayurvedic products and resources.
