Ayurvedic Massage
The allure of Ayurvedic massage is its ability to treat illness, while improving overall health and wellness. Massage helps the body maintain good health by circulating nutrients as they are needed and cleansing the body of toxins that build up over time. This stimulates internal processes that rejuvenate the entire body.Ayurveda teaches that in a healthy body, wind, called vayu, flows through the body vessels, called siras. If this flow is obstructed, aches and pains start to occur throughout the body. By massaging the muscles, heat is generated, which encourages the blocked body air to expand and move more freely. Improving this circulation relaxes the muscles and soothes pain.
Massage for all ages:
In India, infants are given very gentle massages shortly after birth. Babies are regularly massaged with oil to enhance circulation since they are not able to exercise their muscles on their own. As they get older, children usually receive daily massages until the age of three. Up until the age six, they are given massages once or twice a week, when they are old enough to give and receive massages from other family members.Massage is beneficial for people of all ages, including the elderly, infirm or physically challenged. It is an excellent treatment for people who are not able to exercise regularly. An Ayurvedic therapist may use their hands, feet, elbows, and therapy balls during the massage. After warming the major muscle groups, the therapist will stimulate the smaller muscles, especially the abdominal area.
The purpose of the treatment is to keep the muscles supple and also to stimulate the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
New to Ayurvedic Massage?
Ayurvedic massages are considered to be even more luxurious than other massages, since many of them involve four hands working on a person. Instead of regular lubricants, a blend of precious oils and herbal extracts are carefully prepared for each individual. The oils used in Ayurvedic massage are chosen address each individuals needs. A person's condition is usually caused by an imbalance of the doshas. Massage oils may be applied to specific areas of the body to treat specific complaints. For example, oil may be rubbed into the lower back and scalp to improve the memory. If a dosha has become unbalanced, specific oils will be used to bring the body back into harmony. Sesame oils are normally used to calm an aggravated vata, while olive oil or mustard based oils are applied for dominant kapha.
To promote overall health and happiness, fragrant and organic oils are used that follow the seasons. These are normally created in specialized labs by Ayurvedic doctors in India and are then mixed by a skilled massage therapist. Ghee, which is clarified butter, is also commonly used in a variety of Ayurvedic massage treatments. While the aroma of certain oils may seem unusual, they are highly medicinal and ensure that the soothing effect of the massage is long lasting.
An introduction to Ayurvedic massage treatments:
There are four main types of Ayurvedic massage, each with is own specific benefit: 1. To cleanse and purify the body by eliminating toxins2. To improve muscle tone
3. To promote deep relaxation, mentally and physically
4. To rejuvenate the body
Two very popular forms of Ayurvedic massage include:
Bhyanga Mardana, also called Ayurvedic synchronized massageThis ancient massage treatment is the perfect choice if you are new to Ayurveda. Two massage therapists will apply warm herbal oils, specially selected to enhance circulation, cleanse the body of toxins and soothe the nervous system. The synchronized massage is deeply relaxing and allows the herbal oils to penetrate deeply into the tissues to encourage healing.
Shirodhara
During a shirodhara treatment, a gentle, steady stream of warm herbal oil is poured onto the forehead. The oil runs across the temples, head and through the scalp and hair. This treatment soothes the third eye and allows the deepest level of relaxation. A head-to-toe massage follows, also using herbal oil and the treatment is sometimes finished with a full body steam bath.
Although the styles above are not done here but on the Ayurveda retreat we do offer a very nice alternative Ayurveda massage that is based on your specific constitution and is tailored for women and children.
