Ayurveda in India
Today's fast paced lifestyle means that we often treat our bodies with less care than we do our cars! We understand the importance of regular servicing and maintenance of vehicles, but this is even more important in caring for our health. Instead of waiting for a health disaster to happen, Ayurveda teaches people how simple lifestyle changes and herbal remedies can be used to achieve and maintain optimum health. It emphasizes the long lost principle of prevention instead of a cure.Ayurveda: In India and beyond:
In the west, we're just beginning to uncover the benefits of Ayurveda, but in India, it is the main system of medicine that has been used for more than 5,000 years. In cities as well as rural villages, families can be observed using traditional Indian medicine in their everyday life. Families are often giving each other oil treatments and massages as part of their daily routine.Outside of India, Ayurveda is most famous for its treatments including panchakarma, an intense detoxifying treatment and for its luxurious four-hand massages. Celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Christy Turlington, Goldie Hawn and Jennifer Aniston are all reported to be fans. Leech therapy is another treatment that is popular among celebrities for its anti-aging properties.
During the treatment, a qualified Ayurvedic doctor will apply specific types of leeches, which are left on the skin for approximately 30 minutes at a time. The leeches draw out toxins from the blood, which can help to treat hair loss, arthritis and skin conditions.
But these newly fashionable treatments are just the beginning. Ayurveda draws on a huge variety of holistic therapies and lifestyle modifications that can help keep the body functioning harmoniously.
How did Ayurveda begin?
The term Ayurveda comes from two Sanskrit words, "Ayu" meaning life, and "Veda" which means knowledge. Thousands of years of experience in Ayurveda has been passed down through generations of Ayurvedic vaiydas or doctors. Ayurveda is often called the Science of Life, since it encourages physical, mental and emotional health. As Hippocrates is seen as the father of modern Western medicine, the Ayurvedic system is also based on principles founded by an ancient lineage. It is believed that the god Brahma inspired sages to compose the Vedas, holy writings which include Ayurveda. The Vedas emphasize that the information they contain are to be used for the benefit of all human beings. The early masters of Ayurveda included sages by the names of Atrey, Charak, Shusrut and Vagbhatt. Their intense studies of biology and botany helped them to perfect the art of Yoga. Yoga is an integral part of Ayurvedic therapy and has is ever increasing in popularity in the West with models and celebrities, most notably Sting and Madonna.
Ayurveda's holistic therapies have proven to be safe and effective over thousands of years. Its formulas involve herbs, oils and minerals to treat a variety of complaints. Colors and gemstones can even be used. Now that it is much more common in the west, treatments are offered by physicians, therapists and spas as well as at specialized Ayurvedic centers. Ayurveda is also recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a safe and effective health science.
The first step in an Ayurvedic consultation is to determine an individual's overall body constitution. Then a customized treatment plan can be designed to bring the person's entire body and lifestyle into harmony. Ayurveda involves yoga, meditation, massage, dietary changes, herbal remedies and detox treatments such as herbal sweat baths.
Treat yourself as one of a kind with Ayurveda. Its therapies improve the overall health of individuals through a holistic approach that involves the mind, body and spirit.
