It seems that everything old is new again. From retro-inspired cars and furnishings, to slow-cooked home recipes, and even in our health care choices, we are seeing renewed interest in the ways of the past. The appeal is obvious - drawing on these things from an earlier time remind us of a simpler, more natural and less stressful way of life. And more and more, we are starting to realize that the old way of doing things really might be better than our "modern" way of living. The same is true of ancient medical information. A number of natural medical therapies that were used safely and effectively for hundreds of years, before being abandoned by conventional medicine, are coming back into use again, often with amazing results. Have you heard someone raving recently about an Ayurvedic or Traditional Chinese therapy? Not sure what these ancient medicines involve? Read on to learn more about the history of medicine and how it can be the key to health and wellness even in today's modern world.
Ancient medicine - surprisingly sophisticated:
A brief look at the history of medicine shows that many of the treatments that we think of as modern medicine, really date back hundreds, if not thousands of years. A prime example is in Egypt, where mummified bodies can be examined to understand treatments that were commonly used in ancient medicine. One 5000 year old mummy was discovered with an arm splint made of tree bark, indicating that bone fractures were treated and splinted in ancient times. In most cases, bone fractures that are found by archaeologists have healed properly, indicating that proper medical care was widely available thousands of years ago. Egypt's physicians and medical specialists gained them a reputation as "a country filled with doctors", according to the Greek historian Herodotus. Their advanced skills in providing medical diagnosis and treating diseases made Egypt a recognized medical centre of the day and many skilled physicians spread from Egypt throughout the Greek and Roman Empires.Thousands of clay tablet medical records have been discovered in Iraq and other areas that reveal specific treatments that were used by ancient physicians. One clay tablet described patients suffering from night blindness, meaning that they could see clearly in daylight but were unable to see at night. The tablet indicated that the treatment prescribed was for the patient to eat liver. We now understand that night blindness can be caused by Vitamin A deficiency. By treating a patient with liver, which is extremely high in Vitamin A, the patient would have received very safe, effective and affordable treatment.
Ancient medical doctors were recognized as specialists in areas such as:
- Pediatrics
- Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Dentistry
- Vision
The oldest of the old when it comes to ancient medical systems are Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. These therapies are among the earliest systems of medical information in the world and are still in practice by tens of thousands of alternative health care clinics today.
Ancient Indian medicines, which are referred outside of Asia as alternative medicine, are continuing to gain recognition for their safety, availability and effectiveness. In addition to Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and natural medicine homeopathy are also widely practiced in India. These systems involve many therapeutic options to treat illness through diet, herbal medicines, color therapy, minerals, and precious stones. Massage, exercise and aromatherapy are also commonly prescribed in treating medical symptoms.
Traditional Chinese medicine dates back more than 4000 years. In very broad terms, Chinese ancient medicine falls into two categories: internal and external medicine. Internal medicine involves herbal remedies and dietary changes to prevent and treat illness. External Chinese medicine includes therapies such as acupuncture, Chinese massage and cupping.
